Your basic digital marketing strategy—website, email, Google My Business, social media—should be rock solid. But don’t hesitate to test a few different tactics. Try running ads on social media or Google. Some platforms allow you to target remote workers specifically.</span></p>

With inflation driving prices to an all-time high, it’s hard not to wonder… why?</span></p>

And let your customers know you’ll deliver across town. Many people will pay top dollar for the thrill of a new culinary experience!</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That’s why we wrote up this brief guide to hiring the best candidates. Here are five non-negotiables to look for when making hiring decisions:</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">A reliable car.</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This may seem obvious. But it can be surprisingly easy to simply forget to ask a candidate about a car! And some people will apply for every single job opening they find, regardless of qualifications. So make sure you verify this right away, or you could end up hiring someone without their own set of wheels by accident.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">A decent sense of direction.</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You don’t need to be an orienteering expert to follow GPS directions. But you don’t want a driver who totally loses their cool in the event of an unplanned detour or traffic jam. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A year ago, we wrote </span><a href="https://www.datadreamers.com/2022/10/20/whats-going-on-with-food-delivery-robots/?"><span style="font-weight: 400;">this article</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> about food delivery drones and what they mean for your restaurant delivery service (RDS). Given how fast technology changes these days, it’s time for another check-in. The question is: “Are food delivery robots a threat to my RDS?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The answer is about the same: Not likely, save for a few exceptions.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Food delivery robots have officially hit the streets in several </span><a href="https://la.eater.com/2023/9/22/23884293/robot-delivery-los-angeles-restaurants"><span style="font-weight: 400;">major cities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, as well as </span><a href="https://www.miamistudent.net/article/2023/09/food-delivery-robots-have-swept-the-internet-and-now-miami"><span style="font-weight: 400;">college and university campuses</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. In some areas, the robots are </span><a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-robot-food-delivery-technology-business-5b7dbb782f89ef3d586eefb9a33d5e1c"><span style="font-weight: 400;">quite successful</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, food delivery robot technology still has considerable limitations:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Geography. delivery robots are great for urban areas with plentiful sidewalks and the contained environment of college campuses. But you’re not going to see one zipping down a highway or cruising around a suburban area. They’re simply not practical outside a few specific contexts.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Speed. Delivery robots are slow, taking up to </span><a href="https://la.eater.com/2023/9/22/23884293/robot-delivery-los-angeles-restaurants"><span style="font-weight: 400;">35 minutes to travel half a mile</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. There are several reasons for this. First, it’s not safe for them to go flying down a sidewalk above a certain speed. Second, they have to stop and wait at stoplights, just as pedestrians do. And while some pint-sized robots are speedy, delivery robots simply aren’t designed for haste. Given that many people want their deliveries ASAP, delivery robots struggle to complete in areas where a car or scooter would be faster.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Volume. One delivery driver told </span><a href="https://la.eater.com/2023/9/22/23884293/robot-delivery-los-angeles-restaurants"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Eater</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> he wasn’t worried about delivery robots, even though he does most of his deliveries in their ideal territory. ““There are so many deliveries to be made. You couldn’t have that many robots on the sidewalks,” he said. “I think it would be a problem.”</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Accessibility, or the </span><a href="https://www.hks.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/Taubman/AVPI/Taubman-AVPI_ADV%20Publication_05-2022.pdf"><span style="font-weight: 400;">100-foot problem</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. A robot can deliver food to an apartment lobby, but it can’t go straight to your door on the third floor. For many this is simply inconvenient. But for individuals who are elderly, disabled, immunocompromised, or otherwise housebound, it’s a true limitation. For folks who truly need their delivery brought all the way to their door, human delivery is a necessity.</span></li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While some cities are making delivery robots work in spite of these limitations, not all have embraced them. In 2021, </span><a href="https://www.therobotreport.com/toronto-city-council-votes-to-ban-sidewalk-robots/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Toronto</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> banned food delivery robots, with very few exceptions. And they’re not welcome in </span><a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-robot-food-delivery-technology-business-5b7dbb782f89ef3d586eefb9a33d5e1c"><span style="font-weight: 400;">New York, Beijing, or San Francisco</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">So what does this mean for your RDS?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With a few exceptions, you don’t really need to worry about restaurant delivery service robots. If you operate in certain cities, you may lose business in the urban core if they embrace robots. And since food delivery robots are quite compatible with college campuses, they can become your competition there.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But, in most areas, food delivery robots are either totally impractical or outright banned. In other words, it’s worth being cognizant of food delivery robot adoption in your area. But there’s no need to worry about a total industry takeover.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What about food delivery drones?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Food delivery drones have even more practical hurdles to overcome than food delivery robots. In the United States, drones are subjected to countless limitations regarding range and altitude. For example, it’s generally illegal to fly a drone within five miles of an airport. This makes drone delivery impossible in huge swathes of major US cities, including Chicago and New York. And, like a robot, a drone can’t deliver a burger directly to the front door of your apartment. Practicality is a major barrier for delivery drones.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, there are some exceptions. Food delivery drones are abundant in the Chinese </span><a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/05/23/1073500/drone-food-delivery-shenzhen-meituan/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">city of Shenzhen</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and have become very popular. A small area in </span><a href="https://www.cbs17.com/news/local-news/durham-county-news/flying-cheesesteaks-or-coffee-anyone-new-drone-food-delivery-service-launches-in-durham/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Durham, NC</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has also seen some success with delivery drones. Drone regulations could certainly change in the coming years.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the meantime, however, it’s not something to lose sleep over. City infrastructure and drone technology both have a long way to go before delivery drones become competition.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Driver Visibility Report (DVR)</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the restaurant delivery business, every minute counts—but tracking all those minutes can be very challenging. Optimizing your time is especially important on Super Bowl Sunday or other big, busy delivery days. As an RDS owner, you’d sure like to know which of your drivers are hyper efficient and which tend to dawdle. The DVR makes it possible to do exactly that.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you watch the headlines for food delivery news, you may have heard about a new ordinance in Florida. Miami-Dade County is considering a new regulation that affects the way restaurant delivery services (RDS) handle and share customer data. The regulation would also force RDSs to be more transparent about their pricing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Conversation around the ordinance has been heated. So we’re going to break it down for you.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">What, exactly, does the new ordinance entail?</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s a lot of </span><a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/govaction/matter.asp?matter=231055&amp;file=true&amp;fileAnalysis=false&amp;yearFolder=Y2023"><span style="font-weight: 400;">legalese</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to wade through, but there are two main parts to the ordinance: data sharing with restaurants and price transparency.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Data sharing with restaurants</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Usually, restaurants don’t have access to data about any customers who place orders for their food through a third-party food delivery app. This new ordinance would change that.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If the ordinance passes, RDSs will be required to disclose basic customer information from every order to the restaurant. This would include:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Name.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Delivery address.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Phone number.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whether the customer is new or a repeat customer.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">RDSs would </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">not</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> be required to share data such as credit card information.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Price Transparency</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Price transparency is a bit of a sticky subject when it comes to food delivery. </span><a href="https://innovation.consumerreports.org/consumer-reports-investigates-fee-transparency-with-food-delivery-apps/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">This article</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> does a good job showing the ways in which an RDS can partake in partial fee transparency while remaining somewhat unclear.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The new ordinance would eliminate any ambiguity and require RDSs to disclose how much of the customer’s payment goes toward:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The restaurant.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The RDS.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The driver, specifically how much of the tip they receive.</span></li>

<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Viewpoints on the ordinance</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ordinance is championed by the Digital Restaurant Association and sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee. The view of those in favor of the ordinance is that it will allow restaurants to do better business. From their perspective, allowing restaurants access to basic information about customers will empower them to better understand those customers. Commissioner McGhee has also cited consumer protection as a selling point, since the price transparency allows consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Opponents have a few key criticisms of the ordinance. RDSs are concerned that handing over customer information may harm their business. If restaurants have access to customer data, they can market to the customer directly, bypassing the RDS altogether. Others are opposed to the forced “</span><a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article278817624.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">release of digital personal information without any benefit to consumers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.”</span></p>

<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next steps for the ordinance</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a preliminary reading in July 2023, the ordinance passed 8-1. It was scheduled to be reviewed by the Chairman’s Policy Council on September 11, 2023. As of late September, it has been </span><a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/govaction/matter.asp?matter=231055&amp;file=true&amp;fileAnalysis=false&amp;yearFolder=Y2023"><span style="font-weight: 400;">deferred</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Time will tell whether it is enacted.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">What does this mean for your RDS?</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not much, if you don’t operate in Miami-Dade County. But similar laws are working their way through the courts in New York and California. If any of these ordinances pass, they may set a precedent for RDS legislation that spreads throughout the country.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only you can decide what you think about these ordinances. But if you want to be prepared for the possibility of a similar law in your area, here are a few things to consider:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many businesses with seasonal fluctuations adjust their staffing accordingly, and you might be preparing to do the same. Hiring a few extra delivery drivers around early September is a great way to prepare for the restaurant delivery busy season.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, it’s no secret that </span><a href="https://www.careerplug.com/blog/why-is-hiring-so-hard-right-now/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">hiring can be tough these days</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Competition is fierce, and workers have a lot of options. So how do you go about hiring delivery drivers for the restaurant delivery busy season? Here are a few strategies to consider.</span></p>
<h1><span style="font-weight: 400;">Be strategic about pay rate.</span></h1>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This may seem obvious, but the first step to </span><a href="https://www.datadreamers.com/2021/11/02/restaurant-delivery-service-drivers/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">good hiring</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is offering a competitive rate of pay.
