Building a Restaurant Delivery Service Homepage that Connects

A well-crafted Airbnb listing makes you excited and eager to book a stay. In a similar way, your restaurant delivery service homepage should welcome potential customers and make them eager to explore your offerings.

Transitioning from the analogy of a welcoming Airbnb listing to the essential elements of a captivating homepage, let’s talk about the “3Ps.”

Just as a well-crafted Airbnb listing can make the difference between a booked stay and a passed-over property, these three elements can transform your homepage from a mere digital billboard to an inviting and engaging platform that converts visitors into loyal customers.

Your homepage should mirror your ideal customer

Your homepage is the first impression you make on potential customers. It offers a chance to show them that you get them, that you understand their struggles and dreams.

From the moment they land on your site, every element should reflect that understanding. The images, the words, the overall vibe – it all needs to say “I see you, I feel you, and I’m here to help.”

Key elements for a homepage that connects

To have credibility, your homepage has to answer the questions your prospects are asking themselves about your business. This comes down to what we call the 3 P’s:

A Person – Do you know me? First identify who they are and what they want.

With a Problem – Do you feel me? Empathize with their frustration and demonstrate your deep understanding.

You offer a Promise – What’s really possible? Define success beyond expectations in a way that gives them hope.

Let’s break each of these down.

Make it Personal

When you’re passionate about what you do, it’s tempting to want to share too much on your homepage. But the truth is, your ideal customer doesn’t care about all the many options. They care about the one thing that’s going to make their life better. So put yourself in their shoes. What’s the #1 thing they’re coming to you for? What do they REALLY want, even if they don’t know how to articulate it?

Forget about all the bells and whistles for a moment and just focus on that core desire. Then make sure every word and image on your homepage is laser-focused on fulfilling it.

Identify their Problem

Here’s the hard truth: if your homepage isn’t addressing a real, visceral problem for your ideal customer, they’re not going to stick around. In our experience, there are two key problems you need to tackle:
1. The surface problem – This is what they think they need, like a smoother delivery process, reduced costs, or better restaurant delivery service for their customers.
2. The deeper problem – This may be the real issue, the thing keeping them up at night. Maybe they’re struggling to stand out in a crowded market or feeling like they’re constantly spinning their wheels.

Your job is to show that you understand both, but to really dig into that deeper problem. Put yourself in their shoes and genuinely acknowledge their struggles. Only then can you start to offer a solution.

Reveal your (unique) Promise

Okay, so you’ve shown that you understand their problem. Now it’s time to show them a way out. We’re not talking about some generic, one-size-fits-all solution. We’re talking about something specific and tangible, something that makes them say “wait, maybe this is possible.”

Paint a picture of their life after working with you. How will things be different? What will they be able to do that they can’t do now? Use vivid, emotional language and concrete examples.

They need to believe that better is possible. Your homepage needs to give them that.

It’s your turn

Building a homepage that connects is all about putting yourself in your ideal customer’s shoes. It’s about understanding their needs, desires, and pain points, and crafting a message that speaks directly to them.

If you can effectively check off these 3 P’s, you can win trust. It all starts with understanding the person—your ideal customer—forward and backward when it comes to your domain. Step into their shoes, feel their frustrations, and show them you have the answer they’ve been searching for. Pull back the curtain on your process and why it works.

Try thinking of your homepage as being similar to an Airbnb listing. Make sure you’re sending the right message and inviting your ideal customer to step inside.

Restaurant Delivery Service Burnout

In his biography “Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination,” author Neal Gabler describes the legendary innovator and animator’s work ethic as “sadistic determination.”

For most of us in the restaurant delivery service industry, that level of determination seems awe-inspiring …and maybe even a little terrifying. Truth is it’s possible to pour our hearts into our businesses without sacrificing our health, relationships, or mental capability.

But even Disney himself was not immune to the consequences of a lopsided work ethic. In fact, his life and career is a reminder that burnout is real, even for the most successful and driven individuals.

In a 1931 letter to his brother Roy, Disney confessed, “I have had a nervous breakdown. I have gone to pieces. It’s just that I worked too hard and too long.” This honest confession from a legendary figure in American business is an important reminder of how important it is to deal with burnout symptoms before they become overwhelming..

RDS owners face their own unique set of challenges that can quickly lead to burnout. Managing orders, coordinating drivers, ensuring customer satisfaction… It can feel like a never-ending struggle. When you’re the one solely responsible for steering the ship, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need a Disney-like “sadistic determination” to succeed.

The reality is that this mindset is unsustainable and ultimately counterproductive. Here are some warning sign and strategies to keep you balanced

Pay attention to your mental health.

As a RDS owner, you’re no stranger to the physical, emotional, and mental toll. Exhaustion, insomnia, or difficulty concentrating, are only a few of the symptoms of a high-stress environment. These symptoms are also connected to a delicate dance happening inside your body: the interplay between cortisol, dopamine, and oxytocin.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, can drive you to push forward, but when levels remain high for too long, it leads to burnout.

Dopamine is the reward hormone. While it does motivate and engage you, too much challenge with too little reward can cause levels to plummet, and leave you feeling unfulfilled.

Oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone,” fosters bonding, trust, and empathy, but when stress and burnout take over, levels drop, leaving you feeling isolated and disconnected.

The first step is to be aware of your mental state.

Finding your rhythm

To balance this delicate dance of hormones, it’s crucial to recognize the signs of burnout and take proactive steps to prevent it.

Set boundaries, learn to say “no” to unreasonable demands, delegate tasks to trusted team members, and prioritize time for self-care and relaxation.

Schedule regular breaks to normalize cortisol levels, find ways to boost dopamine through small victories and celebrations, and nurture relationships both inside and outside of work.

Remember, your worth as a person and as a business owner is not defined by your ability to work yourself into the ground. Even Walt Disney, known for his “sadistic determination,” had his breakdowns. In the end, it was his ability to find balance and delegate that allowed him to create a lasting legacy.

Take a deep breath, assess your cortisol-dopamine-oxytocin levels, and make a plan to bring them back into balance. Your business, health, and happiness depend on it.

The “I don’t have time” myth

“I can’t afford to take time off or delegate tasks. If I’m not there to handle everything, the business will fall apart”

Does your self-talk sound like this?

It’s a common fear among RDS owners, but the truth is, running yourself into the ground will only hurt your business in the long run. Taking time to invest in your well-being and building a strong, capable team, will help you to handle the challenges and grow your company sustainably.

Where there’s a will there’s a way out (of the craziness)

Burnout is a serious issue in the service industry, affecting not only the owner’s personal life but also the business’s success. By recognizing the signs, setting boundaries, delegating tasks, and prioritizing self-care, RDS owners can prevent burnout and maintain a healthy, thriving business.

There are a number of tactics you can employ such as time blocking, goal setting, or hiring a coach. But what you need most is a strategy—a mindset for growing your way out of the mess. In other words, making your personal wellness as big a priority as making payroll.

Restaurant Delivery Service Burnout – Next Steps:

Take an honest look at your current work habits and identify areas where you can make changes to reduce stress and prevent burnout. Start small, perhaps by scheduling a short break each day or delegating one task to a trusted employee. Remember, your well-being is crucial to the health of your RDS business.

So, in our last post, we went over some basics of dealing with difficult restaurant delivery service customers. You know, the usual suspects – the impatient ones, the chronic complainers, and the just plain rude folks. Part of the deal, right?

This time we’re going to dig in a little deeper with a few advanced tips. Because let’s face it, when it comes to customer service, a little prevention can go a long way in saving you from a major migraine later on.

In the wild world of restaurant delivery, where every second counts and emotions can run high, making the most of every single customer interaction is clutch. Whether you’re dealing with a hangry customer on the phone or a disgruntled one at their doorstep, how you communicate can be the difference between a five-star review and a social media meltdown.

So, buckle up and get ready to level up your communication game.

Implementing Effective Communication Strategies for Better Customer Service

When we’re talking food delivery, let’s not beat around the bush – being on the same page and clear communication can make or break your customer’s experience. It’s not just about getting the order right and delivering it on time. At the end of the day, what also matters is making customers feel like they’ve been listened to, truly understood, and genuinely appreciated.

And this is exactly where nailing your communication game makes all the difference.

Mastering Non-Verbal Communication Skills

Non-verbal communication is a powerful tool in the customer service arsenal. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. Your tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language are all part of the equation.

For example, a smile and a friendly tone can go a long way in diffusing a tense situation with a difficult customer. On the flip side, crossed arms and a furrowed brow can make a customer feel unwelcome and unheard.

So make it a point to train your staff on this stuff. Look for examples of how to recognize their own non-verbal cues and explain why it makes such a big difference in your customer’s perception (and satisfaction). Encourage them to make eye contact, smile, and use open body language.

Training RDS Drivers for Improved Customer Interactions

Of course, it’s not just non-verbal communication that counts. It’s also active listening: giving the customer your full attention and really hearing what they’re saying. It’s not just about waiting for your turn to speak, but sincere willingness to understand their concerns and needs.

Empathy means seeing things from the customer’s perspective. And acknowledging their feelings is like paying the entry fee for demonstrating you understand where they’re coming from.

Actually solving the problem means coming up with a solution that works for both the customer and the restaurant. It’s not about winning an argument, but finding a way to make things right .

By getting your team up to speed with these skills, you’ll see customer interactions go smoother and eliminate a lot of chaos.

Promoting a Positive Relationship with Customers

Your relationship with the customer doesn’t end when the delivery is dropped off. Creating repeat customers is the name of the game. To do that you have to build and maintain connections.

Here are some ‘connectable’ ideas:

Include a thank-you note or small freebie with deliveries

Respond promptly to customer inquiries and complaints

Offer loyalty rewards or discounts for repeat customers

Share behind-the-scenes content on social media to humanize your brand

Dealing with angry or irritated customers is touchy, but dealing with hungry ones, which is even more dangerous. Maintain a focus on positive customer relationships. Succeed there, and you’ll create a loyal fan base that will stick with you through the ups and downs (and the hunger pangs).

Remember, listening, gathering feedback, training your team well, and keeping those customer relationships strong is basically like having a secret map to success in delivery.

Turning challenges into opportunities

Navigating the rough waters of a difficult restaurant delivery customer experience isn’t for the faint-hearted but certainly not impossible either.

Remember, every grumpy caller or displeased diner gives us a chance to flex those problem-solving muscles even further. It’s all about staying calm under pressure, understanding where they’re coming from (because hey, hunger does strange things to people), and keeping that end goal in sight—a satisfied customer munching happily away at their meal.

In essence, transforming these challenges into opportunities for growth requires finesse but also reminds us why we dove into this bustling world of food service in the first place—to serve up joy one order at a time while dodging curveballs thrown by those notorious yet indispensable characters known as difficult restaurant delivery customers.

Here’s the shortlist:

Use these strategies to work through difficult restaurant delivery service customer concerns:

– Put together your own communication strategies for diffusing tension and building rapport, and demonstrate to them that you care.

– Develop a regular habit of training your delivery drivers to listen actively, express empathy and be effective problem solvers.

– Use feedback to identify areas that need improvement, nip problems in the bud, and continuously improve the delivery game.

– Consider education and development as an investment in the knowledge and skills that will enable them to handle customer situations with grace and professionalism

It’s all about fostering long-lasting customer relationships. Don’t forget to show how much you appreciate your customers: send them thank-you notes, loyalty rewards, and respond quickly to concerns.

Embrace the chaos and find the silver lining – difficult restaurant delivery service customer

At the end of the day, mastering the art of customer service in the face of food delivery service challenges is what separates the good from the great. It’s about embracing the chaos, finding the silver lining, and never losing sight of why we do what we do—to spread a little joy and satisfaction, one delivery at a time.

So tackle those tricky customers head-on and show the world what exceptional restaurant delivery service looks like. Because in this wild, unpredictable industry, it’s the businesses that can handle the heat that will come out on top.

The world of difficult restaurant delivery customers can be a roller coaster ride with all kinds of people – and yes, that includes some tough cookies too.

Yes, we’re talking about difficult restaurant delivery customers who can test your patience and your business’s reputation. Whether it’s dealing with someone who’s rude on the phone or an impatient soul who can’t understand why their order is taking so long during peak hours, these encounters are just part of the gig. But here’s the thing – how you handle these situations can make all the difference in turning unhappy diners into loyal patrons.

The key? Know what makes them tick and have a game plan ready. So let’s roll up our sleeves and get down to business because managing these tricky interactions doesn’t have to be as daunting as it seems.

Understanding Different Types of Difficult Customers in Restaurant Delivery

Dealing with customers is one of the most stressful jobs that almost all employees in the restaurant industry have to go through. The stress of dealing with rude customers is one of the main reasons that contributes to employee turnover. What’s worse, as the uncertainty and fear of the pandemic bled over to people’s daily lives, the brunt of it was felt by restaurant employees.

Naturally, the feeling of being ticked off isn’t just a customer thing. Of the nearly 500 deliverers we surveyed, topping the list are weak tips, food not being ready at the restaurant, and lack of communication with customers. To remedy this, many operators are scaling back delivery services and menus, so as not to overwhelm the kitchen and create a negative experience for both the dine-in and delivery customers.

Identifying the Rude Customer

We’ve all encountered them – the difficult customer who seems to find fault with everything. They complain about the food, the service, the prices, you name it. Rude customers can be incredibly frustrating to deal with, but it’s important to remember that their behavior is not a reflection on you or the restaurant.

Be prepared to handle legitimate complaints too. Sometimes you may need to be persistent to work things out, but keeping customers is in everyone’s interest. Teamwork between the restaurant and the RDS is key.

Some telltale signs of a rude customer include interrupting, using offensive language, making unreasonable demands, and refusing to listen to explanations or apologies. The key is to remain calm, professional, and empathetic, even in the face of their rudeness.

Dealing with the Impatient Customer

In the fast-paced world of food delivery, impatient customers are all too common. They want their food now, and any delay is unacceptable in their eyes. This can be especially challenging when you’re dealing with factors outside your control, like traffic or kitchen backups.

The best way to handle an impatient customer is to communicate clearly and often. Give them a heads up that their order is on its way, offer a solid guess on when it’ll arrive, and if there’s any hiccup along the way, don’t forget to say sorry for the hold-up. If possible, offer a small discount or freebie to make up for the inconvenience.

Handling the Chronic Complainer

No matter how hard you try, there will always be customers who find something to complain about. Maybe their food was cold, or their order was incorrect, or they just didn’t like the taste. Whatever the reason, dealing with a complaining customer requires tact and patience.

The first step is to listen to their complaint without interrupting or getting defensive. Apologize for the issue and offer to make it right, whether that means replacing the item, offering a refund, or providing a discount on their next order. The goal is to turn a negative experience into a positive one and retain their business. Of course, you have two customers to please, so don’t make promises the restaurant can’t keep.

To sum it all up

When you’re zipping around delivering meals, bumping into a tough customer every now and then is just part of the gig. Whether it’s the rude customer, the impatient one, or the chronic complainer, each presents its own unique set of challenges. But here’s the deal: once you get a grip on recognizing different types of tough customers and have some go-to strategies ready, you can often flip those tricky situations into wins.

Staying cool, acting like a pro, and showing you really get where others are coming from makes all the difference in how your interactions play out. Listen to their concerns, apologize when necessary, and offer solutions to make things right.

So embrace the challenges, learn from each experience, and watch your restaurant delivery business thrive.

TLDR:

What is the future for food delivery?

The future looks tech-driven, with drone deliveries and app improvements speeding things up and making orders a breeze.

What is the outlook for food delivery services?

Bright as ever. Expect more personalized options and eco-friendly packaging to hit your doorstep soon.

What is the future of food service?

Digital menus, contactless payments, and ghost kitchens are just starters. The main course? More automation in cooking and serving.

Ghost Kitchens – A Stealthy Approach to Food Delivery

Ghost kitchens, or virtual kitchens, experienced significant changes after the COVID-19 pandemic to adapt and survive in the evolving restaurant industry.

Major players like Kitchen United and Reef Kitchens have shifted strategies, focusing on proprietary software and licensing technology. Challenges faced include inflation, lack of profitability, and issues with third-party delivery apps.

Funding for ghost kitchen startups decreased by 31% in 2022 compared to the previous year, impacting the industry’s growth.

There are concerns about transparency as some ghost kitchens operate under different names, leading to confusion for consumers.

Despite the challenges, ghost kitchens are still on the rise, with many restaurateurs shifting to this model. Ghost kitchens cater to the growing demand for online food ordering and are seen as a vital part of the restaurant industry’s future, emphasizing the need for adaptation to stay relevant.

Enhancing Customer Experience in Food Delivery Services

Satisfying customers isn’t merely about the figures; it’s what keeps the heart of the food delivery sector pumping vigorously. These ratings not only encourage customers to come back, but they also build a strong sense of loyalty—a crucial element that smart businesses should leverage.

Prioritizing Convenience for Customers

The key to unlocking this potential? Making it easier for customers every step of the way. From browsing menus online to hitting that final order button, convenience is king. The rise of food delivery apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash has set new standards in how we think about ordering our meals—quick, hassle-free, and right at our fingertips.

But let’s not stop there. Imagine getting your favorite meal delivered without even lifting a finger thanks to voice-activated ordering or having AI predict your cravings before you do. These aren’t distant dreams but very real possibilities shaping the future landscape of restaurant delivery services.

The Impact of Tech on Food Delivery Efficiency

Imagine a world where your favorite meal lands at your doorstep not in an hour, but in half that time. Thanks to drone delivery and automated processes, this isn’t just pie in the sky. Studies show these technologies could slash delivery times by up to 50% in urban areas.

With drones revolutionizing speedy meal delivery, it’s not just about faster food dropoffs. They’re completely transforming how efficiently we get our food. Flying over traffic jams and avoiding roadblocks means your sushi arrives fresh, not as a sad rice blob.

But it’s not all about drones zipping through the sky—automated processes are also streamlining how orders are received and dispatched, ensuring that human error doesn’t turn dinner into disaster.

With every tech leap forward, we’ll see a blend of excitement and skepticism. Yet one thing is clear: the integration of technology is setting new standards for what consumers expect from food delivery services.

Market Trends Shaping the Future of Food Delivery Services

Today, with a few taps on our smartphones, we can have our favorite meals delivered right to our doorstep. But what’s cooking behind the scenes in the world of food delivery services? Let’s dig into some sizzling market trends that are redefining how we order grub.

Consumer Preferences Leading Change

The appetite for online food delivery is growing faster than a yeast dough in a warm kitchen. Experts forecast that by 2029, this sector’s worth will skyrocket into the billions, a growth spurred on by evolving tastes and lifestyles of consumers. In this era, people are chasing after ease and diversity in their dining experiences more passionately than in the past, nudging both eateries and delivery services to elevate their offerings significantly.

The hunger for simplicity and options is not only transforming what’s on the plate but also igniting a wave of creativity in how food services are delivered. From ghost kitchens cranking out meals sans storefronts to apps making it easier than ever to find your next meal fix—technology is at the heart of these changes.

Sustainable Practices in Restaurant Delivery Services

As we look at the evolving landscape of restaurant delivery services, one can’t help but notice the green wave hitting this industry. With a significant chunk of consumers leaning towards companies that sweat the small stuff—like sustainability practices—it’s high time restaurants and delivery services paid attention to eco-friendly packaging and reducing their carbon footprint.

Eco-Friendly Packaging Innovations

In the quest for sustainable solutions, some pretty neat innovations in packaging have come along. Gone are the days when your meal would arrive in layers of plastic. Companies are developing and using more planet-friendly materials.

This resonates with customers who consider the environmental impact before clicking ‘order’. It’s becoming ever clearer that adopting these eco-friendly methods is more than just fashionable or trendy. It’s becoming baked into the culinary industry’s modus operandi.

Reducing Carbon Footprint Through Efficient Deliveries

In addition to switching up packaging, there’s another hero in this saga: optimized routing coupled with electric vehicle fleets. The strategies aren’t just about cutting emissions—they’re reimagining what efficient deliveries look like.

By plotting courses that make sense and rolling out vehicles that whisper rather than roar down our streets, companies are showing they’re serious about sustainability. This proactive approach not only curtails their environmental impact but also carves out a path others will likely follow—a move supported by many seeking greener pastures (or plates).

To sum up the future of restaurant delivery service…

Diving into the way ghost and cloud kitchens are revolutionizing the realm of food delivery, we discovered their role in enhancing speed and expanding accessibility.

Technology is at the heart of this transformation. Drone deliveries promise to slash wait times in half. At the same time, the key to making customers happy lies in how simple it is for them to place and get their orders—it truly changes everything.

Sustainability isn’t just nice to have; it’s essential. Eco-friendly packaging and smarter routes show that going green can coexist with speedy service.

The storyline: Efficiency, convenience, tech-savvy solutions, and sustainability are key players in this game. They’re not just trends but necessities shaping the way we think about getting our meals delivered. Keep an eye out; the landscape is only going to get more innovative from here.

Grow your restaurant delivery business by thinking small. The advantage to hyper-local restaurant delivery data.

As companies expand their operations to a global scale, others are seeing results by going the opposite direction. Hyper-localization is yielding tremendous results in a variety of industries. E-commerce is leveraging micro-fulfillment centers and major brands are offering same-day delivery, much to the delight of customers—and the bottom line.

Many restaurant delivery services and other companies have massive footprints, which can put pressure on RDS owners to think big. However, a hyper-localized approach to food delivery offers considerable advantages to RDS owners.

Here are three advantages to choosing a hyper-local food delivery range.

A smaller footprint means faster food delivery.

According to Statista, over 50% of people expect their food delivery orders to arrive in under half an hour. And people are more than willing to shell out for that service: 27% to 33% of customers will happily pay extra to get their food faster.

Simply put, fast delivery has real value for customers. The best way to deliver that value—pun intended—is to choose your delivery range accordingly. Opting for a tighter delivery range means you can set yourself apart by offering lightning-fast delivery.

Shorter food delivery times lead to better food quality.

Temperature plays a meaningful role in the taste—and enjoyment—of many foods. But food delivery can introduce a complicating factor: time. Hot foods cool down, cool foods become lukewarm, and frozen foods melt as the minutes tick by. The only way to preserve that intended serving temperature for as long as possible is speedy delivery.

A smaller delivery footprint makes this much easier. When the food never travels farther than a set distance, you can reduce the likelihood of delivering a disappointing meal.

Reduce operating costs with shorter deliveries.

Sticking to a smaller delivery radius can lead to cost savings for your business. Shorter routes means lower fuel costs for every delivery, not to mention more efficient use of driver time. If your drivers aren’t going as far for every delivery, they can complete more deliveries per shift.

Leverage customer loyalty with a hyper-local food delivery approach.

There are many reasons why customers prefer to support local businesses. In fact, since the COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of people are motivated to prioritize local businesses over large chains. Opting for a smaller footprint allows you to leverage this passion for supporting local, especially if you market your RDS strategically.

Action steps: How to execute a hyper-local food delivery strategy.

There are two initial steps you might consider when developing a hyper-localization strategy for your RDS.

The first is to define your geographical delivery range. Based on the earlier cited statistic, you may simply decide to limit your footprint to guarantee a thirty-minute delivery window. You may also choose to limit based on distance, rather than travel time. If your RDS has a “homebase” or central location, this can serve as your starting point for mapping out that footprint.

The second is to build your footprint based on your current or desired restaurant clients. Determine the most popular restaurants in your area, the ones that yield the best revenue for you. These can be your anchors as you determine the boundaries of your delivery range.

Once you’ve determined your delivery range, you can focus all your marketing efforts within that footprint. After all, that’s where all your potential customers are. There’s no need to spend time or money outside those boundaries.

Lots of your marketing will be focused on the specific meals and foods you can deliver. But you can share messaging about supporting small, local businesses, too. Check out this article on how to earn the trust of your local customers.

One of the most effective tools for managing your local delivery footprint is restaurant delivery service software, like DataDreamers. DataDreamers uses artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize delivery routes and streamline communications between restaurants, drivers, and customers. This state-of-the-art software has all the tools you need to leverage a hyper-local approach and bolster your RDS business.

How your RDS can navigate hiring challenges, even when the employment market is tough.

The restaurant industry, including delivery, has experienced significant staffing challenges since 2020. Many restaurants and RDSs have struggled to hire and retain good employees, which leads to other issues running the business. This may include providing consistent service, maintaining your operating hours, and more.

However, many restaurants and RDSs have found creative and effective ways to find and keep great workers. Your RDS can borrow these strategies to create a more stable employee base, even when the hiring market is tough.

Here are four ideas for recruiting and retaining good RDS employees:

Be intentional about pay and benefits.

You simply can’t be competitive in the employment market without offering a competitive wage. Do a little research and see what similar jobs in your area are offering. Make sure you’re matching or beating them. And don’t hesitate to get creative. Can you offer regular bonuses? What about profit sharing?

Of course, you can’t replace a good paycheck with other benefits. But additional benefits can give you a real advantage over your competitors. What else can you offer? Flexible scheduling? A consistent schedule or hours? A healthcare stipend?

Find more ideas here >

Get creative about recruiting.

Think beyond the traditional hiring pipelines. Where can you connect with people looking for work? Local colleges and universities are a great place to start, as are community centers. These groups often help people with job training and placement opportunities. You can be part of that. You might even consider offering to speak at one of these programs. It’s a great way to meet people and get your RDS’s name out there.

You might also consider a generous employee referral bonus. Get your employees involved with recruitment by turning it into an opportunity to score a little extra cash.

Talk to your current employees—and don’t take them for granted.

The people who work for you now are an excellent source of intel on the current employment market. They can also offer you pretty valuable insight into what it’s like to work for you. Don’t be afraid to ask! What do they like about the work? What do they not like? What would incentivize them to stick around? Who are the other good employers in town? You might consider collecting this information anonymously via Google Forms or something similar. And be prepared with a thick skin! It’s not always easy to get feedback, but it’s important. If you understand what they don’t like, you can change it. If you understand what they do like, you can leverage that to hire more people.

More importantly, don’t take your current employees for granted. These people are your most valuable assets. Make sure you’re taking care of them. Offer training and advancement opportunities, and ask them what they want. Otherwise, many won’t hesitate to go elsewhere.

Make it easier for your workers to do their jobs.

No one likes a needlessly complex task, especially in a high-speed environment like the restaurant industry. Investing in good technology can make even the most stressful parts of the day easier for your workers.

For restaurant delivery services, this means excellent restaurant delivery software. DataDreamers is packed with features designed to make things easier, safer, and more efficient for your RDS. This includes:

A fast routing tool that finds the most efficient route between your driver’s different stops.

Hands-free notifications so drivers can keep their eyes on the road.

A carefully engineered communications dashboard so you don’t lose track of messages from restaurants, drivers, and customers.

DataDreamers was built by restaurant delivery service industry veterans who know what a good system looks like. And with transparent pricing, you can enjoy these user-friendly tools without the fear of a hefty surprise bill.

How Inflation Has Affected The Cost of Restaurant Delivery Service

Throughout 2022 and 2023, many of us lamented the rising costs of food. Our grocery bills went up. The price of a restaurant meal seemed to skyrocket overnight. Eating is simply more expensive these days.

When the COVID-19 pandemic went global in 2020, virtually every supply chain was affected. Naturally, this drove up prices for everything from cars and trucks to milk and eggs. But, even when the price dropped on other goods, food costs stayed high. Buyers continued to pay 5% to 32% more for basics, such as butter and eggs, well into 2022 and beyond.

Restaurants have been affected, too. The average restaurant bill is up about 6%. And many diners—34%—are switching from fast-casual to quick-serve to save money. But even this isn’t a surefire strategy. 86% of restaurants in the “quick service” category hiked their prices in 2022.

Why is food still so expensive?

There are several reasons why food prices are still so high:

Labor. The COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on the hiring market and worker expectations. Grocery stores, restaurants, and their suppliers have no choice but to pay their workers more. Those costs are reflected in the final price tag.

Production costs. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has predicted that the cost of food production will increase by 4.1% in 2023.

Natural disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t the only disaster that rocked supply chains. Droughts and wildfires have devastated crop yields in the western United States. When supply goes down, demand—and prices—go up.

Human conflict. Ukraine has been dubbed “the breadbasket of Europe.” The country produces roughly 9% of the world’s wheat and 12% of its corn. Wartime has severely limited its export capabilities, leading to supply shortages and, of course, price hikes.

Unfortunately, we’re probably in for another year of expensive eating. The USDA has already stated that food prices are likely to continue to rise well into 2024. “Food-at-home” prices are likely to increase by 2.1%. “Food-away-from-home” prices will go up by 5.1%.

What can your RDS do about high food prices?

Unfortunately, restaurant dining and delivery is one of the first places people cut back when money is tight. But that doesn’t mean your RDS is doomed. We’ve written before about ways to handle inflation in the food industry, but there are other strategies to consider.

Offer a range of price points. As we mentioned above, not all customers are skipping out on restaurant food altogether. Many are simply switching to cheaper dining and delivery options. You can leverage this by offering delivery options at multiple price points. This allows your customers to still indulge, while saving a few bucks.

Offer coupons and discounts. Coupons and discounts are a great way to make a restaurant meal seem more affordable. Of course, you don’t want to get carried away and give up your entire profit margin. But a few strategically employed coupons can tempt even your most budget-conscious customers to place an order.

Ask your restaurant customers what their biggest earners are. Some restaurant owners weather inflation by loading up their menus with items that cost less to make. This allows them to protect their profit margins without having to raise prices as much—or at all. These menu items can be great candidates for coupons and promotions.

Control your own costs.

Inflation of any kind can be challenging for your RDS. One way to stay in control of your finances is to manage your own costs. That’s why DataDreamers uses a transparent, predictable pricing model. We understand the pain of getting hit with an unexpected bill—and vowed that we’d never do that to you. When you choose DataDreamers, you can build your software costs right into your pricing. The result is better control over your spending—and better revenue.

To see DataDreamers in action, schedule a demo >

What your RDS can learn from your restaurant clients about surviving tough times.

The restaurant industry has gotten considerable praise for its resilience during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants all around the world found creative ways to generate revenue and stay in business. While not every restaurant survived, many defied the odds and are now thriving.

With the pandemic in the rearview mirror, we have the opportunity to reflect on what these restaurants did right. More importantly, we can take those lessons and apply them to the restaurant delivery business.

While many factors contributed to the resilience of restaurants, here are three of the big ones:

Endurance.

The COVID-19 pandemic was long. It wasn’t until May of 2023 that it stopped being classified as a public health emergency. Many restaurant operators have stated that their businesses still aren’t entirely back to normal. And yet… their restaurants are still operating.

These businesses succeeded because their operators and leaders were willing to endure a long period of uncertainty. They were prepared to stick it out and find ways to keep the doors open when the going got tough. And that endurance paid off. Nearly half of restaurant decision makers have reported that “the pandemic had a positive impact on their restaurant’s financial situation.” Given how bleak the future of the industry felt in 2020, that is a ringing endorsement of the power of endurance.

Your RDS can reap the benefits of endurance too. You can build your strategy around long-term success, rather than flash-in-the-pan trends. This means building trusted relationships with both restaurants and customers over time. It also means investing in long-term employees. Making decisions with your long-term goals in mind can make your RDS far more resilient.

Strategic novelty.

For months, restaurants couldn’t host diners in house—or they could only accept a fraction of what their space could accommodate. Many restaurants quickly pivoted to the next-best option: carryout and delivery. Needless to say, this was incredibly successful for many restaurants. But many establishments didn’t stop there. They found other ways to bring in new revenue with brand-new offerings.

One great example is to-go cocktails. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, a to-go cocktail, secured via pickup or delivery, was unheard of. These drinks weren’t placed in sealed containers, so having them in a vehicle was illegal. But many states made to-go cocktails legal on a temporary basis, and restaurants made a lot of money off them.

In fact, to-go cocktails have been so successful and so popular that, in many states, they’re here to stay. Over twenty states have legalized to-go cocktails, as long as they are ordered with food.

The lesson here is to build resilience by leveraging new offerings. Many restaurants kept themselves afloat with additional revenue from selling to-go cocktails. How can your RDS copy this strategy? What else can you deliver? Groceries? Flowers? Be creative—and pay attention to what earns money. Boosting your profitability is key to long-term resilience.

Better technology.

One of the most important ways restaurants build resilience is by embracing new technology that makes their business better. Many scrambled to buy and learn online ordering tools when the pandemic rendered in-house dining impossible. The sooner they mastered the technology, the sooner they could bring in revenue that way.

Today, many restaurants are investing in point-of-sale (POS) systems designed for better productivity. They’re also using cloud-based systems to streamline and automate their operations. In short, better technology platforms are translating to better business and greater resilience for restaurants.

Your RDS can leverage the power of technology as well. One fantastic option is DataDreamers, a leading restaurant delivery service software. DataDreamers uses artificial intelligence (AI) to calculate delivery routes and estimate timelines, for better planning and happy customers. DataDreamers also offers integrated payment processing, custom reporting, and other features for better business. Even the dashboard is designed for maximum efficiency, so you can move fast without missing a step.

DataDreamers was designed by experienced food delivery professionals who understand what RDS businesses need. Our goal is to give you the tools to ensure a long future for your RDS. With DataDreamers technology, your RDS can match the resilience of the restaurant industry and keep your customers happy for a long, long time.

A brief guide to boosting the reach of your RDS through your city’s biggest social media stars.

Influencers are ever present in modern society. They’re all over social media, they’re at fabulous A-list events, and they’re in the news. Some people love them, some people can’t stand them, some are more or less indifferent.

But there’s no denying that influencers are powerful. People perceive influencers as their peers, someone they can relate to. Over time, that turns into trust—which affects people’s purchasing decisions. Many people trust influencers over brands and choose products and services based on what influencers recommend. (That’s why they’re called influencers!)

Because influencers are so powerful, brands, including restaurant delivery services (RDS), are willing to pay top dollar to partner with them. TikTok star Charli D’Amelio charges nearly $200,000 for one Instagram post. Needless to say, that’s not accessible for most small brands. And it wouldn’t make sense for your local or regional RDS.

So how does a smaller RDS leverage the power of influencers?

You go local.

Why local influencers are better for your RDS.

There’s no formal definition for a local influencer, but in general, a local influencer:

Has under 10,000 followers.

Almost exclusively posts content related to where they live. They may focus on a certain region, city, or even a single neighborhood.

Partnering with a local influencer can be a fantastic marketing strategy for your RDS, for several reasons:

Their audience is your audience. If your RDS only serves a certain region or city, partnering with a massive influencer with a global reach is inefficient. 99.9% of their audience is outside your delivery range. On the other hand, a local influencer in your city is connected to the exact people you want. You can trust that the majority of their audience has the potential to become a customer.

They’re more affordable. A partnership with a local influencer can be very financially accessible for your RDS. That’s because local influencers charge far less for sponsored posts and context than their massive counterparts. A single Instagram post might be $100—or less!

They get better engagement. Studies show that local influencers with smaller audiences get higher rates of engagement. They’re more likely to get likes and comments on their posts, which boosts the post’s prominence in the algorithm. In other words, their audience is really paying attention to them. If you partner with them, they’ll pay attention to you, too.

How to find local influencers in your area.

So how do you go about finding the right local influencer to partner with your RDS? There are a few strategies to consider.

Start by checking:

Your own Instagram followers.

Your restaurant clients’ Instagram followers (and who they’re following).

Look for accounts with verified check marks or professional photos. Verified accounts are more likely to be influencers, rather than casual users.

You can also use hashtags to find influencers who are active in your area. Variations on #localbuffalo and #chicagofoodbloggers are a great place to start. You can also check hashtags of your city’s airport acronym or nickname, such as #CLE for Cleveland and #MKE for Milwaukee.

Lastly, there are databases and marketplaces you can search to find local influencers, such as Modash or Influencity. These services may charge a fee or take a cut of any deal, so do your research and consider your budget.

Once you’ve found a few local influencers, you might want to observe them for a while before approaching them about a partnership. Look at all their posts, watch their stories, and leave the occasional comment. It’s important to see if you like the “feel” or “vibe” of their brand. Are they friendly and relatable? Or do they post complaints more than they share the good stuff? Not every influencer will be the right fit for you! So don’t be afraid to take your time and get to know your options before you commit.

How to partner with a local influencer.

Once you’ve identified a few influencers you’d like to work with, reach out! Most of these people are very accustomed to talking with brands via DM, though some will want to switch to email. Ask them about their rates and any special deals they might offer. For example, you might be able to get a better deal on a package of three Instagram stories, an Instagram post, and a TikTok.

Some influencers will be open to different types of deals, as well, such as trades or freebies. For example, you might:

Deliver a meal for free in exchange for an Instagram story about it.

Give them $200 worth of ordering “credit” in exchange for a package that usually costs $200.

Before any money exchanges hands, however, you should be crystal clear about your goals for the partnership. Your influencer needs to understand their role and responsibilities, and they need to understand what message they should be sending about your RDS. Of course, part of what people value about influencer marketing is honesty, and you should be prepared for them to tell the truth! But be clear about what you want to achieve with this partnership and what your RDS has to offer.

You might also give the influencer a few content ideas, such as:

A post about their go-to order from your RDS.

A video or series of posts in which they host an event featuring food from your RDS. “Throw a party with me” videos can be very popular.

A post about why they prefer your RDS over one of the big, third-party restaurant delivery platforms.

Most influencers will have lots of great ideas on their own, but you can jumpstart their creativity with a few suggestions.

Start small.

If you connect with an influencer you like, it can be tempting to go all in on a big, long-term partnership. But there’s no harm in starting small. Invest in a smaller package up front and pay attention to the ROI. Ask the influencer if they’ll share metrics on your sponsored posts, such as the number of likes, comments, and views. Better yet, offer a specific discount code for their campaign, so you can track exactly how many orders it brought in. If you get a lot of new customers, you can consider working together more. If the campaign doesn’t get much traction, you can decide to move on.
